Academic Interest: Global health, social EM, immigrant health, and community outreach
Favorite activities in New Haven: Taking walks around Yale’s campus with my family.
Why Yale’s Emergency Medicine Program: What initially drew me to Yale was the program's commitment to recruiting students from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds that represent the community it serves, and the number of residents with lived life experiences and shared interests in leadership, advocacy, and community service. When I arrived at Yale for my sub-internship the Summer of 2021, I instantly felt welcomed and surrounded by friendly and approachable residents and attendings. I was impressed by the cohesion and support among residents and the close working relationship that residents have with program leadership. I was equally impressed by each attending physician’s commitment to resident education, as well as my own. Over the course of 4-weeks, I learned a great deal about the culture and community of Yale EM and the many professional opportunities that exist for residents to achieve their career goals. Everything I wanted in a residency program I found at Yale – a supportive community that will prepare me to be an effective and thoughtful leader and a capable physician ready to care for any and every patient that presents to the ED; unparalleled leadership who believes that every year their program can get better and includes residents in those efforts; and a program that values the diversity in background and thought that I bring to the table.

Jorge R Zaldivar, MD

Hometown: Havana, Cuba and Miami, FL
Undergraduate Institution: University of Florida

Hobbies/Interest:  Playing soccer (or any other sport), salsa dancing (still learning), philosophizing, decolonizing, traveling, hiking.
Past life:  I was born in Havana, Cuba. My parents and I moved to Spain when I was 10, but the global financial crisis led us to move to the states 3 years later in the pursuit of a more prosperous future. After completing high school in Miami, I started college at UF (Go Gators!) and chose Finance as my major, planning to become an investment banker. During my sophomore year, I went back to Miami to complete a 1-year internship at Citi, which led me to realize that the decisions I made as a 17-year-old kid from a lower-middle class family were not that sound. Fortunately, I figured out that if I wanted to do something for the rest of my life, I had to choose a career path I found meaningful and fulfilling. After finishing my internship, I returned to Gainesville and finished my Finance degree while also completing pre-med requirements. Despite a mediocre MCAT score, I was once again fortunate to have my writing resonate with the admissions committee at my Alma Mater, and after a gap year as a medical scribe, I started med school at UFCOM. Here, I discovered just how cool Emergency Medicine is, how compassionate and versatile people in this specialty tend to be, and how I felt like at home in the chaos of the ED.
Academic Interest: Social EM, Health Policy/Public Health, Global Health, Toxicology
Favorite activities in New Haven: Pretending to be at Hogwarts while I walk through the Yale campus
Why Yale’s Emergency Medicine Program:  Besides the outstanding clinical training I will receive while serving the New Haven and Bridgeport communities, I was impressed by the mentors and resources that Yale offers to explore your niche within EM. Specifically, I am incredibly excited to contribute to the efforts of this institution in combatting health disparities and advocating for universal access to quality care.
Random factoid:  I learned English mostly by watching closed-captioned Disney Channel shows. Shout-out to That’s So Raven and the Suite Life of Zack & Cody
