Irini Agaraj, MD

Hometown: Derby, CT
Undergraduate Institution: University of Connecticut (BS)
College, Medical School, other Schools (include degrees earned): University of Connecticut School of Medicine (MD)
Hobbies/Interest: Baking, making cocktails/sangria, hiking/walking, traveling, Albanian circle dancing.
Past life: I lived in Greece with my family and moved to CT when I was 9. I’ve been here since! I thought I’d work in a lab/get a PhD until I did an internship at a hospital in Turkey as an undergrad. After that I completed a post-bac at UConn and applied to medical school.
Academic Interest: Global Health, ultrasound, pediatric emergency medicine. Favorite activities in New Haven: I love all the restaurant options and there’s so much to do (museums, paint nights, concerts pre-COVID). There’s lots of good hiking nearby and I enjoy going to the beach in Milford. NYC is also a train ride away!
Why Yale’s Emergency Medicine Program:  I really enjoyed my interview day even though it was virtual. I was impressed by the support for residents to pursue their interests especially in Global health! I’ve always wanted to work with an underserved, minority population and couldn’t think of a better location than New Haven County where I grew up.
Random factoid:  I have a twin sister who is a pediatric nurse at Yale. We look alike so beware!

2Shota_collage.jpg

College, Medical School, other Schools (include degrees earned): Nagasaki University School of Medicine (M.D.)
Hobbies/Interest: Ocean Freediving, Karate, Traveling abroad, Basketball, EDM Music Festivals, Cats
Past life:  I was born and raised in Fukuoka, Japan (which is the ramen capital of the country)! I completed my medical training at Nagasaki University, the oldest and most international medical school in Japan. During med school, I worked as a research assistant at Wurzburg University Hospital in Germany for four months, and I also spent a year at the University of Pittsburgh where I first learned English. After I finished my general practice residency, I worked as a Japanese Medical Fellow at the US Naval Hospital Okinawa, located at Camp Foster US Naval Base. There, I worked as a liaison between the Naval Hospital and local Japanese hospitals to provide improved overall patient care. I then came to the US two years ago to work as a Research Associate at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles.
Academic Interest:
Global Health, Trauma care, Disaster Medicine, and Ultrasound

Why Yale’s Emergency Medicine Program: This program is a great fit for me! It provides great Global Health opportunities, has a diverse underserved patient population, and a welcoming, collaborative environment.

Favorite activities in New Haven: I grew up in Connecticut, but I never had the chance to explore all of New Haven, so I love exploring all of the sight-seeing, restaurants, and activities New Haven has to offer! It really does have a great variety of things to do depending on your wants. Plus, it is always a great time to try new things around the area with my co-residents and show my non-local friends around my new city!
Why Yale’s Emergency Medicine Program: For me, choosing a residency was all about where I believed I would fit in most and where I would get great training coupled with great mentorship. At Yale, it was evident how happy the residents were to be there and how looked after they were by the faculty. It was comforting knowing there were so many experts in a variety of fields that I could go to for advice about not only my future career, but about anything really. Also, I was excited to be back in my home state and serve the community of my family! The clinical exposure is second to none and the resources available allow me to choose any path forward that I would happen to want.
Random factoid: I wrote a book about my first 100 patients while I was in medical school!

Lakota Cleaver, MD

Hometown: Boulder, Colorado & Puerto Jimenez, Costa Rica
Undergraduate Institution: University of Colorado at Boulder
College, Medical School, other Schools (include degrees earned):
MD, Tel Aviv University Faculty of Medicine
MS in Human Nutrition, Columbia University
AA in Fashion Design, The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising at Los Angeles
Hobbies/Interest:  Foremost, anything outside - climbing, runsploring, cycling, rafting.  I also enjoy doing nothing, sleeping, sour beers, building things, art projects, baking experiments, salsa dancing, and hard core adulting (i.e. eating cookies & popsicles for breakfast).
Past life:  Once upon a time I was a fashion designer & owner/operator of a fashion truck; it turns out I’m a terrible drawer and salesperson, so that failed.  Even longer ago, I sailed around-the-world and thought I was going to be a pirate.  Unfortunately, a boat that I was crewing on capsized off the coast of South Africa in shark-infested waters, so that made me pause on the pirate aspirations. With business and pirating out, the next option was doctoring - and here we are.  Fortunately, in medical school I got to relive my pirating aspirations by being class treasurer - although we had no booty, so really I just took pride in the eye-patch.
Academic Interest:  90% chance I am interested in whatever you are peddling academically.
Favorite activities in New Haven:  To be determined.
Why Yale’s Emergency Medicine Program: There are many reasons.  One of the physicians I admire most is a Yale EM alumni, so I knew that coming to this program could help me become the physician I want to be.  I also had a great interview day experience and felt that I clicked with the people I spoke to.  In particular, I thought that the PD would be a great mentor and an awesome person to train under.  It was important to me to be at a program where I could be myself, and I felt that I could do so full-heartedly at Yale.
Random Factoid: My 15 seconds of fame was when I was 11 years old with my family being featured in National Geographic in comparison to the Swiss Family Robinson in Costa Rica. As such, I am a jungle child with jungle skills. Hence, I also have had many run-ins with wild animals. While we are on the topic, PSA: if someone tries to convince you that licking a jellyfish is like Poprocks, don’t do it. Lies.

Past life:
Growing up I was always in the water or on the beach, so my family and friends all call me Mermaid. I’ve held a lot of odd jobs over the years. My favorite was as a “Sugarcane” for the baseball team in college. I got to watch the games from the dugout and help the team. I have also worked at a milkshake stand and donut shop and I see myself one day owning a quaint little bookstore/bakery.

Favorite activities in New Haven: Visit the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript library, Eat in Little Italy, New Haven Pizza >>>, Walk around Chapel Street
Why Yale’s Emergency Medicine Program: I took the virtual away rotation, and I was so impressed by the residents and faculty. They all genuinely cared about each other and their patients. I wanted to be at a program where I would be surrounded by brilliant minds that inspired me to be better and work harder. Every resident I talked to wanted to help me and encourage me to find my best fit. I felt like if they already cared about my future as a medical student at another institution, that my quality of life would be that much better as a resident at their program.
Random factoid:  I love elephants deeply and am constantly looking for ways to help them not become extinct! Recently, my mom and I were invited to take care of 3 elephants for a day and it was life changing.
