John DeGuardi, MD

Hometown:  Ballston Spa, NY
Undergraduate Institution: Hamilton College
College, Medical School, other Schools (include degrees earned): University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry
Hobbies/Interest:  Running, road biking, skiing, gardening, playing the piano, and painting (specifically watercolors).
Past life: I grew up, went to college, and attended medical school in upstate New York. New York is actually a much bigger state than you realize, so during each of these stages, I was actually living in a different part of the state. It did not really plan it this way, but such is life; anyway, I am excited to be moving to New Haven and this next chapter! In college I majored in Chemistry, and played on the men’s lacrosse team. While in Rochester during medical school, I worked with high school and elementary school students on weekends and over the summer, teaching them basic science concepts and skills. My favorite job I had prior to residency was working on a flower and vegetable farm for three summers outside of Albany, New York.
Academic Interest: Education and Wilderness medicine
Favorite activities in New Haven: To be determined
Why Yale’s Emergency Medicine Program:  The Yale program and its mission to create superior physicians, serve its patients, promote diversity, and encourage learning align closely with my values and goals as I enter the field of emergency medicine. I also felt that the Yale program was committed to supporting and encouraging its residents explore their interests and passions, whether it be research, education, EMS, ultrasound, or global health. But in addition to this, and what thoroughly impressed me, was the welcoming, thoughtful, and kind nature of everyone within the program. Each person I met with during my interview day was so relatable, personable, and excited to be a part of the Yale emergency medicine family. I also noticed, during the tour of the emergency department, that the residents were friendly, and on a first-name basis, with everyone working in the department – I found this particularly unique and a testament to the kind of environment created among the residents and others working in the emergency department. I left my interview day feeling notably excited and very inspired by the program. The advantages of the Yale program were very clear, particularly the exceptional level of training that prepares us to practice anywhere in the world, whether it be an academic, community, urban, or rural setting. Better yet, in training to become exceptional physicians, everyone seemed happy and excited to be doing so.
Random factoid:  When I was a little kid, I was quite fond of superheroes, and in particular, superheroes with capes. My mom, who used to make all of my Halloween costumes, sewed me a batman cape, which I wore everywhere; and my favorite thing to do was wear the cape while riding my bike or roller blading because it allowed the cape to “blow in the wind.” To this day, I remain a big fan of batman and other superheroes, but I do refrain from wearing my cape to work.
